Additional information

This ‘note’ was not written for publication, but for circulation to a few friends. It was Willi Essler's suggestion that it should be published in Erkenntnis (which always had a tradition of ‘mixing’ socio-political engagement with philosophy). I have not tried to ‘polish’ it prior to publication-indeed, I would not know how to construct a polished political essay; but I hope it may be of interest to some of the readers of Erkenntnis. I should say that I owe a heavy debt to Daniel Bell, whose influence on my formulations is very heavy. (Cf. his book The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism.)
