28. Synthesis and polymerization of fluorochlorobromoacetaldehyde

Summary

Fluorochlorobromoacetaldehyde was synthesized in five steps and in 15% overall yield starting from trifluorochloroethylene. Treatment with sodium methoxide gave 1,2-difluoro-2-chloro-1-methoxyethylene which was brominated and the bromination product hydrolyzed with concentrated sulfuric acid to give methyl fluorochlorobromoacetate. Lithium aluminum hydride reduction and hydrolysis of the reaction product gave fluorochlorobromoacetaldehyde hydrate which was dehydrated to the aldehyde. Polymer grade fluorochlorobromoacetaldehyde was polymerized with sulfuric acid to polyfluorochlorobromoacetaldehyde which was characterized.
