The influence of inactive chromosomes on human development

Anomalous sex chromosome complements and the phenotype

Summary

The effects of supernumerary X and Y chromosomes on various traits that can be quantitatively measured are summarised: these traits include dermatoglyphics, intelligence, birthweight, height and immunoglobulin levels. Evidence that heterochromatic X and Y chromosomes can slow down the mitotic cycle of cells in culture is presented. It is proposed that some of the effects extra X and Y chromosome have on the phenotype may be related to a reduced rate of cell division during development.

Zusammenjassung
