Abstract

Turbulence intensity and energy spectra were investigated experimentally in mercury flows in a 2 × 4.8 cm2 rectangular cross section duct subjected to a transverse magnetic field. Velocity fluctuations were measured by means of a quartz coated hot film probe at Re = 78.5 × 103 and 0 ≦ Ha ≦ 785. The results obtained made possible a number of conclusions related to turbulence suppression and structure changes and to energy transfer mechanisms.
