Summary
In the pituitary gland of the Stenohaline teleost Anoptichthys jordani the pro-adenohypophysial acidophilic cells undergo a marked hypertrophy and hyperplasia in deionized water, whereas their activity is suppressed in 20% sea-water. Consequently, it is concluded that these cells are involved in osmoregulation. Correlated changes occur in the mucous cells of the epithelium in the oral cavity; these cells are stimulated in deionized water and are degenerating in salt water. The mucous cells in the epithelium of the gills show an inhibition in salt water, whereas the mucous cells in the epidermis are unaffected by either treatment. Since ovine prolactin may also induce a stimulation of the mucous cells in the buccal cavity, it is supposed that the osmoregulatory factor, produced in the adenohypophysis, is a prolactin-like hormone.
