Summary
The normal fasting blood “sugar” level of three species of elasmobranch (after 14 days starvation) was determined by the Hagedorn-Jensen method as 87,3 mg/100 ml in Scyliorhinus canicula, 74,9 mg/100 ml in Raja asterias and 66,2 mg/100 ml in Torpedo marmorata. The blood “sugar” did not increase significantly after the application of various doses of alloxan (100 to 1500 mg/kg).
The histological investigation of the pancreas revealed a somewhat contradictory result: in Scyliorhinus canicula it was not possible to induce any lesions in the islet organ, even after application of very high doses (1500 mg/kg) of alloxan. We found however severe damage of the exocrine parenchyma in all experimental animals. These lesions in the exocrine tissue varied from simple vacuolar degeneration of many exocrine epithelial cells to almost complete necrosis and necrolysis of whole lobules of the exocrine tissue.
Similar regressive degenerations were found in the interrenal organ, the adrenal bodies and in the convoluted tubules of the kidney after application of high doses of alloxan.
We try to explain this reaction of sharks to alloxan by some exceptional conditions in the physiology of elasmobranchs (the high concentration of urea in the blood and tissues).
