Abstract
Mixtures of kaolinite and quartz were subjected to isochemical hydrothermal experiments under 2000 bars fluid pressure and different mole fractions of various inorganic acids. The reactions — leading to the formation of pyrophyllite and its subsequent breakdown — become bivariant in presence of acids, so that not only the fluid pressure but also the composition of the fluid phase need be specified to define the equilibrium temperature uniquely. While strong acids (HCl and H2SO4) bring about a remarkable shift of the lower and upper stability limits of pyrophyllite towards lower temperatures, weaker acids like HF and H3BO3 do not have any significant influence on the same. Some observations bearing on the genesis of zunyite and topaz are presented and the reasons of the lowering of the equilibrium temperatures are discussed.
