Summary

In a survey of 114 long-stay psychiatric patients, most suffering from schizophrenia, it was found that there was an abnormally long duration of sleep. Several factors appeared to be involved, including the type and severity of illness, social withdrawal, phenothiazine drugs, the bedtime to which patients had become accustomed at their previous hospital, and the influence of the patients' own subculture.
