Abstract

A tripyrrinic carrier has been synthesized and its carrier properties for cations measured using a bulk membrane. A remarkable selectivity was found for Zn+ + and Cu+ + ions. ThepK a values and complexation data of a series of tripyrrinic systems are reported. The basicity of the pyrroleninic nitrogen atom and the geometrical constraints of the ligands are the main reasons for the selectivity and the high efficiency of the tripyrrinic ligand to carry Zn+ + and Cu+ + ions near the diffusion limit.
