On the free-radical reaction of primary alcohols with formaldehyde

Conclusions

The reaction of primary alcohols with formalin or paraformaldehyde initiated by t-butyl peroxide in a glass apparatus under atmospheric pressure leads to the formation of alkane-1,2-diols.
