Abstract
The tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvates of the chlorides of Eu, Tb, Tm and Lu have been prepared for the first time by extraction of the chlorides withTHF. This same methods allowed the preparation of analogous compounds of most other rare earth chlorides with improved purity. TheTHF-content of the solvates is: La and Ce 1.5 moles, Nd and Pr 2 moles, Sm to Tm, including Y 3.5 moles, Yb and Lu 3 moles solvent per mole chloride. The solvates with 3.5THF change to 2 molTHF upon treatment with ether or benzene (newly prepared where the 2-mole solvates of Eu, Tb and Dy). The solubilities of the stable solvates inTHF at 22° where determined.
