Abstract
Among possible structural surface defects atomic steps constitute so far the only well investigated defect. With Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) step density, orientation, terrace width, step arrangements and other structural parameters may be measured. Steps are present on nearly all surfaces, special step configurations may be produced by proper treatment. The presence of steps affects many surface properties like surface states, work function, adsorption and catalytic activity. It is therefore important to know the existence and properties of steps on all investigated surfaces.
