Summary
Visceral afferents in cranial nerves X, IX, VIII, V exert an inhibitory reflex action on circulation and respiration. This consists indepressor reflexes (vagal depressor reflex, glossopharyngeal carotid sinus reflex, vestibular depressor reflex) or inslowing down of the heart rate (trigeminal oculocardiac reflex). The centers of these reflexes are located in a column consisting of sensory nuclei of cranial nerves extending from the sensory nucleus of the vagus caudally to the sensory nucleus of the trigeminal nerve orally. Thus, the various visceral afferent systems and the corresponding inhibitory centers constitute an anatomical and functional unit with vasodepressor and cardio-inhibitory properties. The caudal portion of this homogenous apparatus specifically protects the vessels from overdistention due to sudden blood pressure rise (Entlastungsreflexe), whereas the oral portion (trigeminal afferent system) primarily protects the respiratory organs with simultaneous cardio-inhibitory reflex as a side-effect.
