Summary
The nervous system of the prostate gland in normal and pathological state has been examined, using the silver-staining technique ofRichardson (1960) as modified byNewton (1964). Normal material was from humans, dogs and monkeys; the pathological material consisted in 6 cases of adenomyomatosis of the prostate gland and a human prostate-carcinoma.
In the material of adenomyomatosis the nerve fibres are found to assume a corkscrew formation and show decomposition into fine, argyrophile granules, particularly in the area of smooth muscle tissue and in the tunica propria.
Examination of the carcinoma of the prostate gland reveals a paucity of nerve fibres. Observations mentioned in the literature concerning the appearance of nerve fibres in adenoma and carcinoma are included in the discussion.
The normal canine prostate gland has been electronmicroscopically investigated. The cytoplasmic constituents of the epithelial cells display a structure common to all body cells. Where as the mitochondria are located mainly in the cell base, the osmiophile secretion granules appear almost exclusively in the cell apex.
Concerning the innervation of the smooth muscle tissue of the prostate gland, this appears to be achieved, as in all flat muscle fibres, by the development of a neuro-effector area.
