Uncoupling of phosphorylation in chlorella by 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid

Summary

The plant growth regulator 2,4-D inhibits the incorporation of P32O4 into ATP and ADP by Chlorella to a much greater extent than it does the accumulation of inorganic phosphate by the cells.

Comparison of 2,4-D effects on P32 incorporation into nucleotide-P with those of 2,4-dinitrophenol shows that when supplied as equal concentrations of undissociated acid molecules, they are nearly equally effective.

Both 2,4-D and DNP in concentrations which inhibit the incorporation of P32 into nucleotides stimulate the uptake of oxygen by Chlorella, supporting the suggestion that they are effectively uncoupling phosphorylation.
