Behavioural and EEG effects of intracarotid sodium amytal injection

Summary

After a brief introduction concerning the definition of consciousness, the author describes the behavioural and EEG modifications due to unilateral intracarotid injection of sodium Amytal in man with and without contra-lateral carotid compression. Some problems of cerebral dominance (disorders of speech, body scheme disturbances and emotional reactions) as well as the disorders of consciousness are discussed.

Nach kurzen Vorbemerkungen zur Definition des Bewußtseins beschreibt der Autor die Veränderungen von Verhalten und EEG, die beim Menschen durch einseitige Injektion von Sodium Amytal in die Carctis, mit und ohne gleichzeitige Kompression der gegenseitigen Carotis, hervorgerufen werden. Einige Probleme der cerebralen Dominanz (Sprachstörungen, Körperschemastörungen und emotionale Reaktionen) sowie die Störungen des Bewußtseins werden besprochen.

Résumé

Après avoir donné une brève définition de la conscience l'auteur décrit les modifications que provoque dans le comportement et l'EEG, l'injection intra-carotidienne unilatérale du sodium Amytal, chez l'homme, avec et sans compression carotidienne contralatérale. Il discute de quelques problèmes de la prédominance cérébrale (troubles du langage, troubles du schéma corporel et réactions émotives) aussi bien que des troubles de la conscience.

Riassunto

Dopo una breve premessa riguardante la definizione di coscienza, l'A. descrive il comportamento e le modificazioni elettroencefalografiche dovute a iniezione intracarotidea unilaterale di Amytal sodico nell'uomo con e senza compressione controlaterale della carotide. Vengono discussi, poi, alcuni problemi della dominanza cerebrale (alterazioni del linguaggio, disturbi dello schema corporeo e reazioni emotive) cosi come i disturbi della coscienza.

Después de hacer una breve definición de la conciencia el autor describe las modificaciones producidas en el comportamiento y el EEG por la inyección intracarotídea unilateral de Amytal sódico en el hombre, con o sin compresión carotídea controlateral. Discute sobre algunos problemas de la dominanza cerebral (trastornos del lenguaje, trastornos del esquema corporal y reacciones emotivas) así como sobre los trastornos de la conciencia.
