Summary
On contact with 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine) and its derivatives, alumina, magnesium oxide etc., are brought to yellow-green to blue-white fluorescence, which appears in UV light. The fluorescence reactions are due to the formation of inner complex salts or to the chemical adsorption of oxine and its derivatives from the gas phase. These fluorescence reactions permit the micro detection of oxine and its colorless derivatives.
