The effect of pressure on the sensitivity and fluorescence of the photographic emulsion

Cechoslovackij fiziceskij zurnal Aims and scope

Abstract

The paper gives a survey of all known pressure effects on the photographic emulsion, particularly the temporary desensitising effect, and briefly deals with the known fluorescent phenomena of photographic layers. Experimental results are given of research on permanent pressure desensitisation and its dependence on pressure, the wave length of the light used and the photographic material. A proof is submitted of the irreversibility of permanent pressure desensitisation. A lowering of the intensity of fluorescence of the photographic emulsion through the influence of pressure is described. All experimental results are explained on the basis of existing conceptions on the origin of the latent image as well as of fluorescent phenomena.

Additional information

The work was carried out in 1950 and 1951 in the Physics Institute of Charles University, Prague, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. L.Zachoval. It is my pleasent duty to thank proffessorZachoval for the attention which he devoted to this work. Iwould also like to thank Dr. Z.Matyáš for valuable discussions, Prof. Ing. Dr.Jareš from the High School of Machine Engineering for his kind loan of machine equipement, and Ing. A.Koštal from Prof.Jareš's Instute for his devoted help in all experiments with the press. My thanks also go to also other members of the Physics Institute and the Institute for Photo-Chemistry and Photo-Physics of Charles University, and particularly to E.Mikula and J.Kartaš for their willing help whenever it was necessary.

Finally, I would also like to express my gratitude to the Czechoslovak People's Democratic Republic for making possible my stay in Prague and my study and work at Charles University.
