Here we do not touch on the differences between the methodological approaches to historical and literary synthesis which are especially apparent in works on the history of world literature. On this subject see in the book: Современные Буржуазные концепции истории всемирной литературы. Москва, Наука, 1967. On the metodological principles for the structure of a History of World Literature, on which Soviet scholars are working now, see: Неупокоева, И. Г.: Методологические вопросы построения. One such tradition common to the European literatures is traced by E. R. Curtius, in: Europäische Literatur und lateinisches Mittelalter. Bern, 1948.
Abundant material on this subject is provided by the International Slavistic Congresses. See also the documents of the Budapest Conference of scientists of the socialist countries on the comparative study of literature. Acta Litteraria Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae, Budapest, Vol. V (1962).
A most fruitful setting of the problem of the various tasks and, accordingly, methods of comparative study is given by M.B. Chrapčenko: There are various “levels”, as it is agreed to call them today, of typological study. Besides the typology of literary trends, the typology of genres is also of great significance. For a long time, especially in art criticism, there has been intense development of the typology of style. Of extreme interest and great importance is the typology of historical literary development—the elucidation of species, types, in the literary process of the different historical periods among the peoples of different countries ... For example, the typology of literary trends naturally touches upon questions concerning not only their species, how they appeared in the history of world literature, but also the types, say, of romanticism or realism, including the national types of these literary trends. (Typological Study of Literature. In: М. Б. Храпченко: Творческая индивидуальность писателя и развитие литературы. Москва, Советский писатель, 1970, p. 257.) See also: M.B. Chrapčenko: Typologische Literaturforschung und ihre Prinzipien. In: Aktuelle Probleme der vergleichenden Literaturforschung. Berlin, Akademie-Verlag, 1968; Soveto bungaku. Tokyo, 1968, n. 9–10.
A considerable contribution to this field of comparative research has been made by the well-known Soviet scholars N. I. Konrad and V. M. Zhirmunsky.
