The utilization of glucose in the brain slices during uraemia

Abstract

Rat brain cortex slices were incubated in diluted sera obtained from patients with renal failure and from healthy persons. It was found that uraemic sera inhibited glucose uptake and the incorporation of14C-D-glucose into aspartate, glutamate and gamma-aminobutyrate (GABA). The concentration of these amino acids in the brain slices did not change.
