Sommario

Summary

In this work the Authors examine the consequences of the second law of thermodynamics (Clausius-Duhem inequality) on the constitutive relations for the heat flux q and the dectric current j in isotropic solids.

Taking a recent result of Coleman and Dill into account, the Authors deduce the most general nth-order expansion for q and j as functions of the temperature gradient g,the electric intensity E and the magnetic intensity H.

A detailed description of the so-called thermoelectric, thermomagnetic and galvanomagnetic effects is developed within a fourthorder theory, since it can be shown that no qualitatively new effect is possible at higher order approximations.

Moreover, the Authors prove the existence of a new fourthorder effect in “holohedral” solids, which is analogous to one already pointed out by Pipkin and Rivlin in “hemihedral” solids and which has not yet been noted before in the periodical literature.
