Abstract
Integration of heterogeneous computer-based subsystems in a hospital is examined with respect to component attributes of distributed data processing and communications technology. Requirements of system users, designers, and managers are identified for developing an integrated system. Technical approaches to satisfy stated requirements are discussed and a selected system design is described. The selected approach supports immediate integration of diverse subsystems, and fosters user-controlled growth through use of a highly flexible, intelligent communications network subsystem.
