Summary
We propose a method for studying the distribution of a gas chromatographic stationary phase composed of a single pure substance between monolayers and bulk phases inside a coated support by measuring the variation of the retention volume of any solute with temperature near the melting point of the stationary phase, and we observe transitions which are characteristic of the phases in the support. With the normal paraffins and fatty alcohols on Chromosorbs and macro-porous or mesoporous spherosils, we demonstrate the abnormal sorption properties of surface solids and liquids. On the other hand we confirm the lack of wetting of silanized supports by all these compounds, polar or apolar. A numerical application to a highly loaded column illustrates the danger of comparing such stationary phases with normal liquids.
