The role of veterinary science in the developing tropics

Summary

The contribution of veterinary science to food production and human health in the tropics is analysed. The basic difficulties arising from the environments, animal husbandry methods and sociological patterns are emphasised. The deployment of veterinary services for disease control and animal production is outlined, particularly in the fields of extension work and research. Recommendations are made on methods of applying technical aid programmes with special reference to the role of Australia in the Indo-Pacific area.

Résumé

Ce travail analyse la contribution apportée par la science vétérinaire à la production alimentaire ainsi qu'à la santé humaine. Les principales difficultés inhérentes à l'environnement, aux méthodes d'élevage et aux coutumes sociales sont examinées. Le dispositif des services vétérinaires chargés du contrôle des maladies, et de la production animale est décrit, plus particulièrement en ce qui concerne les travaux sur le terrain et la recherche. Des recommandations sont faites sur les méthodes utilisées dans l'application du programme d'aide technique avec référence spéciale sur le rôle de l'Australie dans la zone Indo-Pacifique.

Se analiza la contribución de la ciencia veterinaria hacia la producción de alimentos y la salud humana en los trópicos. Se enfatizan las dificultades básicas derivadas de los embientes, métodos de explotación animal y patrones sociológicos. El despliegue de los servicios veterinarios para el control de enfermedades y la producción animal es bosquejado, particularmente en los campos de extensión é investigación. Se hacen recomendaciones sobre métodos de aplicación de programas de ayuda técnica con referencia especial al rol de Australia en el area Indo-Pacifica.
