Abstract

Attempts are made in this paper to describe the early development of social behaviour and the factors which influence emerging emancipation in pigtail macaques and baboons. The importance of association with peers is stressed and older sisters seem to exert a greater influence than brothers. No evidence has been found for the suggestion that punishment and rejection contribute to the infants' growing independence.

Over-protection as well as rejection seem to hinder or retard emancipation.
