Perturbation on positronium hyperfine splitting from diamagnetic ions

Summary

A large perturbing effect of diamagnetic ions in aqueous solution on the positronium hyperfine splitting has been revealed through magnetic-quenching measurements. The hyperfine splitting amounts to ΔW=0.57 ΔW vac (at concentration ≥0.2 mol). This lowering, if interpreted on the basis of the model of Urbanovich, indicates that there exists a bound state of positronium in water and in aqueous solutions of diamagnetic ions.

Misure di spegnimento magnetico hanno messo in evidenza una forte perturbazione sulla separazione iperfine del positronio generata da ioni diamagnetici in soluzione acquosa. Il valore della separazione iperfine risulta ridotto al 57% del corrispondente valore in vuoto. Questo risultato, interpretato sulla base del modello proposto da Urbanovich, indica tra l’altro l’esistenza di uno stato legato del positronio in acqua e nelle soluzioni esaminate.
