Aspects of the interf Ci l chemistry of nickel extraction with LIX63-HDNNS mixtures

Abstract

The extraction of nickel from acidic aqueous solutions with LDC63(HOx:)-dinonylnaphtha-lenesulfonic acid (HDNNS) mixtures has been studied using purified reagents. Interfacial tension data and infrared spectra are provided which indicate the presence of an oximesulfonate interaction. Extraction of nickel is significant only if HDNNS micelles and HO* molecules are present together in the organic phase. The stoichiometry of the extracted nickel complex appears to be Ni: oxime = 1:3. An extraction mechanism is proposed involving HDNNS micellar enhancement of the oxime-nickel chelation reaction.
