Summary
The total probability of aK-shake-off process in β-decay has been reformulated by correcting the theory by Law and Campbell. By means of the improved formulation and by adding simple corrections for theK-shake-up contribution and for the correlation effect betweenK electron and other bound electrons, the totalK hole creation probability per β-decay has been evaluated for 24 interesting nuclides. There exist distinct disagreements between our calculated values and recent experimental data; the measured probabilities are systematically larger than our calculated ones for medium- and high-Z nuclides. This clearly indicates that the theory ofK shake-off, as here corrected, is not sufficient to explain the recent experimental data. This is contrary to the conclusion recently presented by many other workers that theK-shake-off plus shake-up process is the predominant mechanism ofK-shell internal ionization and excitation in β-decay. It will be necessary to introduce the β-particleelectron correlation in future theoretical treatments.

Equation (13) is obtained by transforming the momentum spectrum given by eq. (22) in ref. (4); into the energy spectrum and then by replacingG 2 v ξ/2π 3 → →A|M N|2, |〈e′ p‖e K〉|2/2π 3 → |M A(E)|2, |〈e′ s‖e K〉|2/2π 3 → |M A(E′)|2,F(Z′, E p) →F(Z + 1,E) andF(Z′, E s) →F(Z + 1,E′). It is noted here that this discussion is concerned with the atomic initial state having only oneK-shell electron.
In one of our previous papers (ref. (22)), we defined the energy-dependent anti-symmetrization factorΞ(E K,E β ) to express the effect of the quantum exchange. However, it should be noted that the exchange effect can be expressed more definitely by this term.

There exist two theoretical works which support a contribution of the DC process.Feinberg pointed out in ref. (3) that the ratioP K(DC)/P K(SO) may not be less than unity for nuclei with highZ and low decay energies. An interesting examination of the DC process was performed byR. M. Weiner, based on a semi-phenomenological approach (seePhys. Rev.,144, 127 (1966)). He estimated the total DC probability using the experimental electron impact cross-section. His predicted values exceeded experimental data available at that time.

We have presented previously a suggestion that the DC process may play an important role when both a β-particle and aK electron are emitted with low kinetic energies:Y. Isozumi, T. Mukoyama andS. Shimizu:Phys. Rev. Lett.,29, 298 (1972).
