About collision-process lifetimes and causality

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento A (1965-1970)

Summary

The authors generalize their previous results, by defining and calculating reaction and partial-process lifetimes, to the case of two-wave-packet collisions with an arbitrary number of final packets. Besides, they express the principle of causality and the new one of « anticausality » in terms of interaction time shifts. Some notes about tachyons are added.

Infine aggiungono alcune note concernenti i tachioni.

  8. One possibility for their existence may be perhaps seen in the following « working hypothesis ». It is known that tachyons—if they exist—have a pure imaginary conventional « rest mass ». It is also well known that in the field of elementary-particle strong interactions (at high energies)virtual particles—which are usually supposed to be exchanged in « peripheral » processes and, for instance, to constitute the « clouds » surrounding baryons—must in general (except,e.g., for photon scattering!) possess, for kinematical reasons, a negative square momentum (see,e.g.,Verde, ref. (13)).
