Any work actually performed or intimated as having been carried out in this paper was done under the tenure by A.D.K. of license PK 0053760 from the Federal Bureau of Narcotic and Dangerous Drugs (BNDD) and Certificate No. 2712 from the Department of Health of the State of New York. Work done at Brookhaven has been done under license PA 0042818 and under the auspices of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, now the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA).

Information provided in this paper reflects the state of affairs as of May 15, 1974. Since the problem of illicit opium production is of great socio-economic importance, one can appreciate the state of flux that emerges as a result of the continuing attempts on the part of various governments to eliminate or at least minimize the illegal trade. This means that great caution should be exercised in assessing the situation as it currently exists in any given country.
