Summary
After a single intraperitoneal injection of 5 mg of lyophilized skin powder (“chalone”), the epidermal mitotic rate in hairless mice was depressed for about 4 hr. The period of decreased mitotic rate was not followed by an increased mitotic rate in the subsequent 22 hr. The results suggested that the depression of the mitotic rate could be caused by a delay of cells in G2, and that some of the affected cells in G2 were permanently prevented from continuing their division.
