Nicotinic acid inhibition of uricase

  • Published:
Irish Journal of Medical Science (1968-1970)

Summary

Nicotinic acid, a drug which produces hyperuricaemia has been shown to be an inhibitor of uricase, the bacterial enzyme responsible for the elimination of a considerable portion of the body’s uric acid. Calculations indicate that inhibitory levels of the drug could arise in the intestine during therapy causing the hyperuricaemia observed during administration of this drug.
