Inheritance of serum cholesterol and its relation to body weight in white mice

Summary

The mode of inheritance of serum cholesterol level and its relationship to body weight in white mice was considered:

  1. 1.

It was found that in male mice the serum cholesterol was highly heritable but not in female.

  2. 2.

Weight at 63 days was highly heritable in the case of the males and not in the females.

  3. 3.

There was a high genetic correlation between cholesterol level and weight in male mice and to a considerably less degree in female. The trend is similar in phenotypic correlation.

  4. 4.

It is suggested that the low incidence of atherosclerosis in women could be due to differences in the mode of inheritance of cholesterol level in two sexes.
