Anselm L. Strauss, professor of sociology at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco, is currently directing a research project called “Hospital Personnel, Nursing Care, and Dying Patients.” His most recent books, now in press, arePsychiatric Professions and Ideologies, written with Leonard Schatzman et al., andAwareness of Dying: A Study of Social Interaction, with Barney G. Glaser. This article is based on a study conducted by Strauss with Leonard Schatsman, Danuta Ehrlich, Rue Bucher, and Melvin Sabshin.
