Color Variation of Polarized Polychromatic Beam Passing Through a Birefringent Medium

Abstract

When a polarized polychromatic beam passes through a birefringent medium, the constituent spectral components suffer different change in its state of polarization. As a result, when the beam passes through an analyzer, the color of the resultant beam changes depending on the orientation of the analyzer, stale of polarization of the input beam, spectral intensity distribution of the source and the polarizing properties of the birefringent medium. In the present article color variation of the resulting beam in C1ELAB space is observed with the variation of the azimuthal angle of the analyzer for both film-type chromatic and prism-type achromatic quarter-wave retarder.
