Influence of Post-Welding Heat Treatment on the Impact Toughness of Welded Joints of P91 Steel

  • WELDED JOINTS

Metal Science and Heat Treatment Aims and scope

We study sheets made of ferritic-martensitic P91 steel subjected to electric-arc welding and heat treatment in three different modes, namely, tempering (PWDT), normalizing with tempering (PWNT), and double austenitization (quenching + normalizing) with tempering (PWDNT). It is shown that the procedures of PWDNT and PWNT treatment increase the impact toughness but decrease the spread of microhardness. The PWDNT procedure leads to the formation of a finer structure than in the case of PWNT treatment, which leads to an increase in the impact toughness up to 135 J due to the formation of a homogeneous structure of tempered lath martensite with numerous fine inclusions of M23C6 and MX. The fracture processes in welded joints treated in the PWDNT and PWNT modes and subjected to impact tests run according to the ductile mechanism.
