Intranuclear Accumulation of Iba-1 Protein in Microgliocytes in the Human Brain

Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Iba-1 protein is a widely recognized marker for microglial cells and was previously observed by the authors in microgliocyte nuclei. The aim of the present work was to refine these data using immunocytochemistry and confocal laser microscopy methods. Studies were performed on human brain fragments (cortex, striatum, substantia nigra, red nucleus) (n = 18, age 25–78 years). The results showed that Iba-1 protein accumulates in one or more areas in microgliocyte nuclei, which were neither the nucleolus nor clumps of heterochromatin. The causes for this are unclear. Iba-1 protein, apart from carrying out its main function (a role in phagocytosis), may also operate as a transcription factor.
