Abstract

The paper describes an experimental investigation of the effect of the air-vacuum interface translation on measurements of the FG5/X absolute gravimeters. The effect is also known as the air gap modulation effect and its value has not been precisely estimated up to now. We have used an experimental setup with a Renishaw interferometer to monitor the translation of the air-vacuum interface during the free fall depending on a type of the dropping chamber, tripod legs and anti-vibration pads. The measurement results show that the effect of the air-vacuum interface translation on the g-values is below 0.1 µGal for the recoil-compensated FG5X gravimeter. In case of the FG5 gravimeters, the effect is typically reaching up to 1 µGal and can be corrected with the expanded uncertainty of 0.1 µGal. Our findings reveal that the combined uncertainty of the FG5/X gravimeters has the potential to be reduced.
