Burial class and age of death: A study on an old cemetery in Roermond During the Dutch industrialisation period, regional differences in health have been interpreted more substantial than socioeconomic differences in health within regions. We examined socioeconomic differences in mortality in urban Roermond during the rise and fall of the local industrialisation. Using data of 803 burials on the cemetery “Nabij Kapel in 't Zand” in Roermond, it is examined whether burial class 1880, 1895, 1913, and 1930 was related to age of death. Burial classes differed in costs related to the burial and were thus manifestations of the status and prestige of the deceased. Analysis of variance was used to compare mean ages of death between the four burial classes. Cheaper burial classes were related to lower ages of death. Men and women in the (free) fourth class practically never reached their 40th birthday, while their counterparts in the most expensive first class easily reached 60 or 70 years, when they died in 1913 and 1930. The pattern was similar across the four years and in men and women, but differences became somewhat smaller after exclusion of infant deaths. The findings in urban Roermond in the period 1880 – 1930 suggest the presence of substantial socioeconomic differences in health within regions during the Dutch industrialisation period.
