2020, Advances in Biomembranes and Lipid Self-AssemblyCitation Excerpt :However, this reflects the changes in the transverse direction only. Another significant change takes place in the plane of the bilayer, namely to the area per lipid [35]. As a first approximation, one can estimate the behavior of area from the fact that bilayer thickness increases linearly with each additional carbon, and so does lipid volume.

2014, Chemistry and Physics of LipidsCitation Excerpt :It has been shown that small non-polar substances mostly enter the membrane via passive diffusion (Endo et al., 2011) and then position in the middle of the lipid bilayer (McIntosh et al., 1980). Effects of such hydrocarbons on membrane properties often involve an increase in membrane surface as the hydrocarbons increase the spacing between the acyl chains (Cornell and Separovic, 1983). Benzo[a]pyrene interacts with the carbonyl groups on the phospholipids (Korchowiec et al., 2008), and might therefore have the same effect.
