More convincing data on the beneficial effects of vitamin D on insulin secretion were obtained in experiments demonstrating that synthesis and release of insulin by islets isolated from normal animals could be enhanced by glucose challenge in the presence of high doses of 1,25(OH)2D3.139,140 Stimulation of islets by 1,25(OH)2D3 was shown to significantly increase the levels of cytosolic Ca2+, indicating that this could be a mechanism by which 1,25(OH)2D3 is able to stimulate insulin secretion.141–143
