2022, Autonomic Neuroscience: Basic and ClinicalCitation Excerpt :Roughly half of the C1 neurons indeed directly innervate spinal preganglionic neurons and therefore qualify as “presympathetic”, i.e., bulbospinal neurons that regulate sympathetic tone, in part at least, via monosynaptic projections to preganglionic neurons (Milner et al., 1988). The region that contains the bulk of the C1 cells with spinal projections was called nucleus rostroventralateralis or RVL by Reis and colleagues and subretrofacial nucleus by others in the 1990s (Dampney, 1994; McAllen et al., 1994; Reis et al., 1988). This region resides below the rostral (Bötzinger) segment of the ventral respiratory column albeit with substantial overlap.
