Abstract

The photoelectron spectrum of HCP has been obtained, Ionization potentials are found at 10.79 ± 0.01 eV (X2 Π) and 12.86 ± 0.01 eV (A 2 Σ). By comparison with HCP, a new interpretation of the first photoelectron band of HCN has been proposed which involves a Renner-Teller interaction in the Σ+ vibronic states of the molecular ion.

In particular, a new family of aromatic anionic phosphorus heterocycles have become building blocks for the synthesis of transition metal complexes [3–5]. The filled level electronic structures of the RCP phospha-alkynes, with RH [6,7], CH3[8], C(CH3)3, Si(CH3)3[9] and F [10], phosphabenzene [11] and 2,4,6-tritertbutyl-1,3,5-triphosphabenzene [12] have been characterised by means of photoelectron spectroscopy, as well as those of phospha-benzene [13] and phospha-cyclopentadienyl [14–16] transition metal complexes. Although the complementary electron affinity data are as important as the ionisation energies (IEs), from both the theoretical and reactivity points of view, experimental data on the gas-phase empty level structure in this class of compounds have not been reported, except for phosphabenzene [17].
