Abstract

An analytic expression has been obtained for the leading order curvature correction to the Hogg-Healy-Fuerstenau (HHF) formula for the electrical double layer interaction of two dissimilar spherical particles. The physical basis of Derjaguin's method for obtaining the interaction energy of spheres from that of parallel plates is elucidated. We have shown that next-order correction terms are of the order of 1κai (κ = Debye-Hückel parameter and ai = radius of sphere i (i = 1, 2)) and reconfirmed that for large κai the HHF formula is a good approximation. We also give a simple expression for the charge distribution on the surface of interacting spherical particles.
