Abstract

Comparative partition data are presented for the solvent extraction of mineral acids, uranium (VI), and some lanthanide elements by dis-(di-n-hexylphosphinyl)-alkanes, [(C6H13)2P(O)(CH2)nP(O)(C6H13)2, n=1,2,3,4], as a function of the aqueous concentration of nitric, hydrochloric, and perchloric acids. Extractions from nitric and hydrochloric acids followed quite similar patterns when comparing partition data from the same acid media among the four compounds. However, large increases were noted in the distribution ratios obtained for extractions from perchloric acid with bidentate ligands having methylene carbon bridge lengths, n ≤ 2. Loading studies, differences in extraction, and visible spectra of the uranium (VI) perchlorate adducts of HDPM (n = 1) and HDPE (n = 2) were interpreted as possibly indicating the formation of disolvated complexes containing two chelate rings.

Bisphosphine oxides have elicited considerable interest of chemists due to their wide-range of useful properties. In addition to their well-known metal complexing abilities and performance in extraction of heavy metals [1–6], these phosphorus compounds have gradually developed from a synthetic challenge to a directed and rational design of novel molecular materials with outstanding optoelectronic properties. For instance, many bisphosphine oxide-based molecules have demonstrated good performances as organic host materials for phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes [7].

Bidentate neutral organophosphorus compounds such as arylsubstituted methylene diphosphine dioxides and diaryl- or alkyl(aryl)[dialkylcarbamoylmethyl]phosphine oxides (CMPO) are known to be efficient extractants for separation and pre-concentration of actinides and lanthanides from highly active wastes of nuclear fuel cycles [1,2]. The extraction ability of bidentate neutral organophosphorus compounds is higher than that of their monodentate analogs [3,4]. It was shown that compounds containing P(O)CH2P(O) and P(O)CH2C(O) moieties with aryl substituents of the phosphorus atom were superior to alkyl-substituted ones in their ability to extract trivalent lanthanides and actinides from HNO3 solutions [5,6].
