On the acoustic boundary condition in the presence of flow

Abstract

The boundary condition on the acoustic perturbation velocity at an impermeable surface in a flow is considered for the cases in which the surface generates a sound field by vibration or is acoustically deformed by an incident sound field. It is shown that in general the condition is not equivalent to the requirement of continuity of acoustic particle displacement in the direction normal to the unperturbed surface.

Mirror-based multimodal straightforward method for impedance eduction using a zigzag array

The Mirror-based Multimodal StraightForward Method (MM-SFM) is proposed herein to realize accurate and reliable liner impedance eduction covering the wide frequency range of aeroengine fan noises. It adopts a novel zigzag array in the flow duct, and unfolds them by a coordinate transformation into a mapping diagonal array in an extended duct, which can increase the array transverse spacing $Δ z$ considerably. Then, it invokes the M-SFM incorporating the trust-region and extended Prony's algorithms, to decompose the three-dimensional multimodal aeroacoustic field and educe the impedance. A parametric study based on the Monte-Carlo uncertainty analysis is conducted through finite-element numerical experiments on a 51 $\times$ 51 mm² flow duct, to survey the method performance under random perturbations. It indicates that, the educing accuracy and reliability are promoted by increasing $Δ z$ or the axial spacing $Δ x$ properly, and the decomposed-mode number $M \times N$ =10 is appropriate herein. In our studied cases, using the recommended array of $Δ z = 25.5 mm$ and $Δ x = 22 mm$ locating at the nodes of transverse mode m = 2, the MM-SFM generally produces accurate averaged educed impedances in a considerably extended frequency range from 100 Hz up to nearly 10 kHz, and has small educing uncertainties at most absorptive frequencies and thus a good reliability.
Shear flow effects in a 2D duct: Influence on wave propagation and direct impedance eduction

Impedance eduction of acoustic liners with flow is commonly performed under the assumption of a uniform velocity profile. In practice, the flow profile is not uniform and a significant mean flow shear is present close to the duct wall. The present paper aims to assess the validity of the uniform flow assumption, and more generally to study the effect of the mean flow shear on the impedance eduction process. This is particularly relevant when considering large ducts, high frequencies, high-order acoustic modes and flow velocities representative of aircraft engine nacelles. A numerical mode-matching model is used to compute the sound field in a 2D lined duct with different flow profiles. A detailed parametric study evaluates the influence of the mean flow shear on the axial wavenumbers of the acoustic modes and on the educed impedance. Various parameters are considered: the flow velocity profile (boundary layer thickness and mean Mach number), the direction of acoustic propagation relative to the flow, two different liner configurations and the presence of noise in the pressure data. A number of recommendations are given to achieve robust impedance eduction in large-duct facilities and at high-frequencies.
Homogenization of the acoustic transmission on periodically perforated plates interacting with potential mean flow

The paper is devoted to the homogenization of the acoustic waves interacting with background steady inviscid and irrotational flow in the neighbourhood of rigid periodically perforated plates. We present a model of an acoustic interface obtained by the asymptotic homogenization of a thin transmission layer in which the plate is embedded. To account for the presence of the mean flow, a decomposition of the fluid pressure and velocity in the steady and fluctuating parts is employed. This leads to a linearization and an efficient use of the homogenization method with the model order reduction effect. The acoustic perturbations of the velocity potential are governed by an extended wave equation depending on the advection velocity due to the mean flow. The coefficients of the homogenized interface depend on the flow. The derived model extended by natural coupling conditions provides an implicit Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. Numerical simulations of wave propagation in a waveguide illustrate the flow speed influence on the acoustic transmission. Also geometrical features of the plate perforation are explored.
Axial wavenumber-merging design method for finite-length liners

The Cremer concept via the classical entire-mode merging fails in most cases to achieve the optimal design for finite liners, whose efficient design remains unsolved. To this end, based on not only the simple- but also the cross-modal power analyses, the axial wavenumber( $k_{x}^{*}$ )-merging design method (AWMDM) is proposed herein, merging the imaginary part Im( $k_{x}^{*}$ ) and modulating the real part $Re (▵ k_{x}^{*}) = 2 π q / L^{*}$ . It is found for a not-too-short finite liner of length $L^{*}$ that, the AWMDM of q = 1 and 2 can almost capture the globally optimal and suboptimal solutions, respectively, while the Cremer concept is a particular case of the AWMDM at q = 0. The physical mechanism to optimize a finite liner is further revealed: 1) the simple-modal power shows purely exponential attenuation and can be minimized directly by merging Im( $k_{x}^{*}$ ); 2) under the premise of merging Im( $k_{x}^{*}$ ), the total cross-modal power exhibits a periodic oscillation, and just reaches the first/second trough at the liner exit when one/two (q = 1 or 2) complete oscillation(s) occur(s) within $L^{*}$ by modulating Re( $k_{x}^{*}$ ), and thus can be minimized. However, the Cremer concept is based on the infinite-length assumption and considers only a single simple-modal power, so that 1) it cannot capture the inlet effect of the total power in a finite liner; 2) the unexpected cross-modal power has an oscillating period tending to be infinite and thus cannot reach the trough at the exit, which result in its limitation. Generally, the AWMDM of q = 1 and q = 0 exhibit the optimality at lower and higher Helmholtz number scopes respectively, and the valid scope of q = 1 is significantly expanded with the increases in both the length $L^{*}$ and the circumferential mode.
Acoustic scattering mechanism and noise attenuation of circumferentially non-uniform liner with spectral-wave guide method

In this paper, a model is established with application of the spectral-wave guide method, which has higher accuracy and can serve as a rapid calculation tool for sound transmission calculations. Based on this calculation model, some numerical results of circumferentially non-uniform lined annular/circular ducts are carried out, and some physical mechanisms can be discovered. The numerical results show that periodical impedance distributions along the circumferential direction will lead to discontinuous scattered modes with regular spacing; and mirror-symmetric structure liner will converge the energy of opposite modes. Relying on this mechanism, the potential of acoustic scattering can be further developed by suppressing lower or enhancing higher order modes with expressly designed segmented liner configurations. In particular, the intrinsic mechanism of mode redistribution brought about by the non-uniform liner can be subtly utilized to attenuate broadband noise. The present work indeed shows that circumferentially non-uniform liner is conducive to the reduction of the practical broadband sound source. Furthermore, the effects of non-uniform flow are considered in the model, then distinction of noise attenuation and scattered modes energy in different flows is shown. A possible mechanism is proposed that refraction effects in complex flows lead to the distinction. These works show that the current model has profound potential and availability for the research and designs of circumferentially non-uniform liner.
An experimental study on three-port measurements for acoustic characterisation of the perforate resistance

Perforated plates are frequently applied in passive noise-control systems in e.g. aircraft liners and mufflers. Many of the applications of a perforated plate involve an exposure to grazing flow and high-amplitude acoustic incidence. The ongoing scientific effort of providing experimental results using multiform test setups is continued in this study. Incorporating the three-port technique, the passive acoustic response of a perforated plate is studied under acoustic excitation from three directions in presence of grazing flow and high-amplitude acoustic excitation. The applied three-port technique has an advantage of being a direct method for impedance determination and is not bound by any boundary conditions traditionally considered in presence of grazing flow. In this study, a semi-empirical model for the normalised resistance of a perforate is presented. The model takes the Mach, Strouhal, and Shear numbers into account. Additionally, for low grazing flow speeds, the non-linear effects of resistance are found to be dependent on the grazing flow speed.
