Abstract

Formulae are deduced and evaluation procedures, both graphical and by computer, are derived for the evaluation of the optical constant n(v and k(v), the mean thickness d and the relative thickness variation $Δd d = γ$ of transparent and weakly absorbing wedge-shaped thin films. The films may be free or supported on thick transparent substrates of known refractive index n_s(v). The evaluation procedure uses only transmission data, i.e. the spectral transmission curves and their envelope curves which together define sets of tangency points used in the calculations.

Spectroellipsometric study of the sol-gel nanocrystalline ITO multilayer films

Tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) thin films have been deposited by sol–gel process using ‘sols’ of indium and tin isopropoxides. The thickness of one deposited ITO layer is approximately 50 nm. The desired thickness was obtained by 1–5 successive depositions. The XTEM cross-sectional view of an ITO sample with five depositions showed a clear delimitation of the layers with an alternating structure dense/porous ITO layers. The void fraction in porous regions varies between 20 and 25%. Cubic bixbyite In₂O₃ nanocrystals with size of 10–20 nm and no phases separation of tin oxide were observed. The optical properties of the films have been investigated by optical transmission and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Reliable optical constants and porosity are obtained only with the model of internal structure based on XTEM results.
Morphology, structure and optical properties of sol-gel ITO thin films

The alkoxidic route and the spinning deposition were used to prepare monolayer sol–gel indium tin oxide (ITO) films. The morphology and crystalline structure were investigated by cross-section transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The ITO sol–gel mono-layer contains three regions of different porosities. The basic crystalline structure is that of the In₂O₃ lattice. The optical properties have been studied by optical transmission and spectroscopic ellipsometry.
Complex refractive index of Titan's aerosol analogues in the 200-900 nm domain

The main gas-phase constituents of Titan's upper atmosphere, N₂ and CH₄, are photolyzed and radiolyzed by solar photons and magnetospheric electrons, respectively. The primary products of these chemical interactions evolve to heavier organic compounds that are likely to associate into the particles of haze layers that hide Titan's surface. The different theories and models that have been put forward to explain the characteristics and properties of the haze composites require a knowledge of their optical properties, which are determined by the complex refractive index. We present a new set of values for refractive index n and extinction coefficient k calculated directly from the transmittance and reflectance curves exhibited by a laboratory analogue of Titan's aerosols in the 200–900 nm range. Improvements in the aerosol analogue quality have been made. The effects of variables such as the uncertainty in sample thickness, aerosol porosity, and amount of scattered light on the final n and k values are assessed and discussed. Within the studied wavelength domain, n varies from 1.53 to 1.68 and k varies from 2.62×10⁻⁴ to 2.87×10⁻². These final n and k values should be considered as a new reference to modelers who compute the properties of Titan's aerosols in trying to explain the atmospheric dynamics and surface characteristics.
Colloidal sol-gel ITO films on tube grown silicon

Electrical and optical properties of colloidal ITO sol-gel films on glass substrates have been investigated. The optical gap of 3.14 eV and room temperature conductivity of 4 Ω⁻¹cm ⁻¹ were obtained on ITO layers of about 500 Å thickness. Heterostructures of ITO/n-Si have been obtained by colloidal sol-gel deposition of ITO. In this deposition method, the oxidation of silicon during the heterostructure formation can be avoided. The silicon substrates were cut out of silicon tubes. Electrical and photoelectric properties of these structures have been studied in comparison with those of p-n tube-Si junctions obtained by thermal boron diffusion. On ITO/n-Si heterojunctions, the spectral quantum efficiency has a maximum value of about two times higher and a blue shift of the maximum position from 0.75 to 0.6 μm, than those for p-n junctions. A theoretical investigation of the I–V curves for ITO/n-Si heterojunctions under various illumination levels has been performed and contribution of the tunneling and series resistance phenomena were evaluated.
Amorphous r.f.-sputtered Si<inf>100-x</inf>Ni<inf>x</inf> thin films with 0 ≤ x ≤ 15 at.%: Structural, optical and electrical properties

The temperature dependence of the conductivity (between 15 and 300 K) and optical transmission spectra (between 0.8–3.5 μm) have been measured on r.f.-sputtered Si_100−xNi_x with 0≤x≤15. The films were characterized by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Changes in the optical sub-bandgap structure, with corresponding changes in the conduction mechanism take place by varying the Ni content. The films are amorphous, showing a main broad diffraction peak. Its position deviates, for this concentration range, from 2k_F (k_F=Fermi radius), the alloy losing the Hume–Rothery character present for 50≤x≤60.
ZnO thin film deposition by laser ablation of Zn target in oxygen reactive atmosphere

ZnO thin films were deposited by laser ablation of Zn target in oxygen reactive atmosphere. The films are crystalline, their c-axis is perpendicular to the substrate surface, they exhibit high optical transmission (95% in the visible range, with a step transition at 380 nm), a band gap value of 3.2 eV and a high piezoelectric coefficient. A YAG laser (λ = 1.06 μm, _FWHM = 10 ns, 0.3 J/pulse), was used as laser source. The material was collected on different substrates: Si wafers, sapphire, Corning glass plates. The influence of the process parameters on the physical properties of the deposited films was studied. The target-collector distance was varied in the range 4–8 cm, the oxygen pressure was set between 10⁻³ mbar and 10⁻¹ mbar, the collectors were heated at different temperatures between 20 and 350°C. Cross-section scanning electron microscopy, optical transmission spectra, X-ray diffraction and electroacoustic studies were performed to characterize the deposited films.
