Abstract

The aim of this work has been to penetrate one of many possible avenues towards a potential ecological risk index to be used as a diagnostic tool for water pollution control purposes, i.e. to sort out which lakes/basins and substances should be given special attention. The work is based on the thesis that a sedimentological risk index for toxic substances in limnic systems should at least,account for the following four requirements.

Standardized framework for assessing soil quality at antimony smelting site by considering microbial-induced resilience and heavy metal contamination

Antimony smelting activities damage the soil and vegetation surroundings while generating economic value. However, no standardized methods are available to diagnose the extent of soil degradation at antimony smelting sites. This study developed a standardized framework for assessing soil quality by considering microbial-induced resilience and heavy metal contamination at Xikuangshan antimony smelting site. The soil resilience index (SRI) and soil contamination index (SCI) were calculated by Minimum Data Set and geo-accumulation model, respectively. After standardized by a multi-criteria quantitative procedure of modified Nemerow's pollution index (NPI), the integrated assessment of soil quality index (SQI), which is the minimum of SRI_NPI and SCI_NPI, was achieved. The results showed that Sb and As were the prominent metal(loid) pollutants, and significant correlations between SQI and SRI indicated that the poor soil quality was mainly caused by the low level of soil resilience. The primary limiting factors of SRI were Fungi in high and middle contaminated areas, and Skermanella in low contaminated area, suggesting that the weak soil resilience was caused by low specific microbial abundances. Microbial regulation and phytoremediation are greatly required to improve the soil quality at antimony smelting sites from the perspectives of pollution control and resilience improvement. This study improves our understanding of ecological effects of antimony smelting sites and provides a theoretical basis for ecological restoration and sustainable development of mining areas.
Priority sources identification and risks assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in agricultural soils of a typical antimony mining watershed

Heavy metal(loid) (HM) pollution in agricultural soils has become an environmental concern in antimony (Sb) mining areas. However, priority pollution sources identification and deep understanding of environmental risks of HMs face great challenges due to multiple and complex pollution sources coexist. Herein, an integrated approach was conducted to distinguish pollution sources and assess human health risk (HHR) and ecological risk (ER) in a typical Sb mining watershed in Southern China. This approach combines absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) models with ER and HHR assessments. Four pollution sources were distinguished for both models, and APCS-MLR model was more accurate and plausible. Predominant HM concentration source was natural source (39.1%), followed by industrial and agricultural activities (23.0%), unknown sources (21.5%) and Sb mining and smelting activities (16.4%). Although natural source contributed the most to HM concentrations, it did not pose a significant ER. Industrial and agricultural activities predominantly contributed to ER, and attention should be paid to Cd and Sb. Sb mining and smelting activities were primary anthropogenic sources of HHR, particularly Sb and As contaminations. Considering ER and HHR assessments, Sb mining and smelting, and industrial and agricultural activities are critical sources, causing serious ecological and health threats. This study showed the advantages of multiple receptor model application in obtaining reliable source identification and providing better source-oriented risk assessments. HM pollution management, such as regulating mining and smelting and implementing soil remediation in polluted agricultural soils, is strongly recommended for protecting ecosystems and humans.
Legacy of herbicides in water from Hailun City, Northeast China: Occurrence, source, and ecological risk assessment

Herbicides (HBCs) are extensively used in modern agriculture. However, their potential negative impacts on environmental media have emerged as a significant environmental concern. In this study, we employed positive matrix factorization (PMF) to identify the potential sources of HBCs. Furthermore, we utilized a multi-matrix ecological risk model to assess the risks associated with HBCs in both surface water and groundwater in the black soil region of Northeast China. The findings revealed that the levels of ∑₁₅HBCs in surface water and groundwater ranged from 585.84 to 6466.96 ng/L and 4.80 to 11,774.64 ng/L, respectively. The PMF results indicated that surface runoff and erosion accounted for 50% of the total HBCs in water, serving as the primary sources. All tested HBCs exhibited acute risk values within acceptable levels. The risk index for the ∑₁₅HBCs was categorized as “moderate risk” in 31% of the surface waters and 13% of the groundwaters. However, 4% of the groundwater sampling sites reached the “high risk” level. The chronic risk quotient of ∑₁₅HBCs in surface water and groundwater was 92% and 62% at the “high risk” level, respectively. Interestingly, non-carcinogenic HBCs contributed more significantly to the ecotoxicology of the aquatic system than carcinogenic HBCs. This study provides comprehensive information on the legacy of HBCs in water bodies and emphasizes the potential risks posed by HBCs to aquatic systems. The results obtained from this study could help relevant management authorities in developing and implementing effective regulations to mitigate the ecological and environmental risks associated with HBCs.
Pollution characteristics and quantitative source apportionment of heavy metals within a zinc smelting site by GIS-based PMF and APCS-MLR models

The abandoned smelters present a substantial pollution threat to the nearby soil and groundwater. In this study, 63 surface soil samples were collected from a zinc smelter to quantitatively describe the pollution characteristics, ecological risks, and source apportionment of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs). The results revealed that the average contents of Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Hg were 0.4, 12.2, 3.3, 5.3, and 12.7 times higher than the risk screening values of the construction sites, respectively. Notably, the smelter was accumulated heavily with Cd and Hg, and the contribution of Cd (0.38) and Hg (0.53) to ecological risk was 91.58%. ZZ3 and ZZ7 were the most polluted workshops, accounting for 25.7% and 35.0% of the pollution load and ecological risk, respectively. The influence of soil parent materials on pollution was minor compared to various workshops within the smelter. Combined with PMF, APCS-MLR and GIS analysis, four sources of HMs were identified: P1(25.5%) and A3(18.4%) were atmospheric deposition from the electric defogging workshop and surface runoff from the smelter; P2(32.7%) and A2(20.9%) were surface runoff of As-Pb foul acid; P3(14.5%) and A4(49.8%) were atmospheric deposition from the leach slag drying workshop; P4(27.3%) and A1(10.8%) were the smelting process of zinc products. This paper described the distribution characteristics and specific sources of HMs in different process workshops, providing a new perspective for the precise remediation of the smelter by determining the priority control factors.
Effects of soil metal(loid)s pollution on microbial activities and environmental risks in an abandoned chemical smelting site

Abandoned chemical smelting sites containing toxic substances can seriously threaten and pose a risk to the surrounding ecological environment. Soil samples were collected from different depths (0 to 13 m) and analyzed for metal(loid)s content and fractionation, as well as microbial activities. The potential ecological risk indices for the different soil depths (ordered from high to low) were: 1 m (D-1) > surface (S-0) > 5 m (D-5) > 13 m (D-13) > 9 m (D-9), ranging between 1840.65–13,089.62, and representing extremely high environmental risks, of which Cd (and probably not arsenic) contributed to the highest environmental risk. A modified combined pollution risk index (MCR) combining total content and mobile proportion of metal(loid)s, and relative toxicities, was used to evaluate the degree of contamination and potential environmental risks. For the near-surface samples (S-0 and D-1 layers), the MCR considered that As, Cd, Pb, Sb, and Zn achieved high and alarming degrees of contamination, whereas Fe, Mn, and Ti were negligible or low to moderate pollution degrees. Combined microcalorimetry and enzymatic activity measurements of contaminated soil samples were used to assess the microbial metabolic activity characteristics. Correlation analysis elucidated the relationship between metal(loid)s exchangeable fraction or content and microbial activity characteristics (p < 0.05). The microbial metabolic activity in the D-1 layer was low presumably due to heavy metal stress. Enzyme activity indicators and microcalorimetric growth rate (k) measurements were considered sensitive indicators to reflect the soil microbial activities in abandoned chemical smelting sites.
Contamination characteristics of uncultivated arable lands and health risk warning based on the predicted heavy metal content in rice—Dongting Lake Basin, China

An arable land shortage is emerging due to soil pollution and a growing population, with many cultivated areas experiencing high-intensity utilisation. Uncultivated arable land (UAL) represents a potential resource, essential for safeguarding future food supply. However, the contamination characteristics and risks of heavy metals (HMs) in UAL remain unclear, hindering safe crop production when UAL is activated for farming. A total of 52 soil samples of UAL were collected in the Dongting Lake Basin, China, to assess contamination levels and potential risks of HMs. The study found that Cd (1.11 mg⋅kg⁻¹) and As (43.48 mg⋅kg⁻¹) were the primary pollutants responsible for ecological and occupational health risks in UAL of the Dongting Lake Basin, which were derived from industrial and agricultural sources, respectively. Should these UAL be reclaimed for rice production, dietary exposure to HMs would pose significant non-carcinogenic and unacceptable carcinogenic risks based on predictive models utilising the bioavailable HM content in the soil. According to the predicted content of HMs in rice and the total amount of HMs in soil, UAL was categorized into four groups (reclamation, reclamation after restoration, ecological remediation, and strict control). To ensure the safety of rice production, it is suggested that UAL in the west and south of Dongting Lake Basin could be reclaimed after ecological monitoring and restoration, while UAL in the east of the study area was classified as requiring strict control. This study provides support for reasonable reclamation and risk assessment of UAL.
