Abstract

A simple evolutionary procedure is proposed for shape and layout optimization of structures. During the evolution process low stressed material is progressively eliminated from the structure. Various examples are presented to illustrate the optimum structural shapes and layouts achieved by such a procedure.

Topology optimization of coated structures infilled with multiple materials

A novel topology optimization method for the design of coated structures infilled with multiple materials is proposed in this paper, where a novel material interpolation model for the topology description is developed based on the ordered SIMP scheme. With the introduction of two special Heaviside projections into the two-step filtering and projection procedure, the external coating and the substrate region can be well identified by using several modified design variables. Then, the material distribution of the multi-material infilling is obtained by multiplying the infill identification field with the piece-wisely projected design variables and optimized via the mathematical programming algorithm under the ordered SIMP framework. Using an eroded density field and its original field, the uniform thickness of the external coating can be well controlled. The proposed approach for optimizing coated structures with multi-phase infill materials is easy to implement due to its implementation relying on those frequently-used filtering and projection operations. Besides, without introducing any additional design variables, the method developed in this paper inherits the advantages of the ordered SIMP method and has great calculation efficiency and stable iteration performance. With the consideration of several issues such as different coating thicknesses and different design parameters, several 2D numerical examples are studied to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, as well as a 3D example. The optimization results illustrate that the method developed in this paper is effective for the design of coated structures infilled with multiple materials and the advantages of considering multiple infill materials is also validated.
Multiscale topology optimization of structures by using isogeometrical level set approach

This study aims to optimize topology of structures at macro and micro scales, simultaneously, by using a level set method in an isogeometric analysis (IGA) framework. To achieve this, equilibrium and homogenization equations in the model are solved by IGA method. The level set functions are defined over a grid in parameter space of associating b-splines of the IGA model. Therefore, control net of the model and level set grid are separated and there is no need to refine the control net for having smooth boundaries. Sensitivity analyses for both scales are performed to calculate the velocity of boundary points and the level set functions are updated by solving reaction-diffusion equations. Finally, several 2D and 3D examples with different geometry and boundary conditions are provided to show performance and efficiency of the method. Obtained results show good agreement with examples in literature in terms of both topology and final value of objective function. Also, by using IGA level set method, smooth boundaries are achieved in the final topology of micro and macro structures.
A two-stage network framework for topology optimization incorporating deep learning and physical information

The advent of deep learning provides a promising opportunity to improve the efficiency of topology optimization. However, existing methods make it difficult to achieve a balance between efficiency, accuracy, and generalization ability. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel method based on a two-stage network framework. In the network, the partial convolution block and shifted windows attention mechanism are integrated to improve the model performance. In the first stage, a convolutional neural network-based model trained with a novel-designed loss function is employed to achieve real-time prediction of suboptimal structures. In the second stage, transfer learning is introduced to inherit the output of the first stage. Subsequently, the second stage optimizes the suboptimal structures to get the final optimal structures in a physical information-driven way. On the 2000 dataset, the two-stage method achieves an average compliance error of −1.45%, and 95.5% of the optimal structures perform better than that obtained by the traditional method and strictly meet volume constraints while eliminating structural disconnections. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a real-world engineering application for the first time, and the design of bridge pylons is given as an example. The results show that the proposed method is a promising exploration of topology optimization based on deep learning.
Topology optimization of orthotropic multi-material structures with length-scale control based on element-free Galerkin method

The topology optimization framework based on element-free Galerkin (EFG) method for orthotropic multi-material structures with length-scale control (LSC) strategy is proposed, including maximum and minimum LSC of solid and void phase. The alternating active-phase algorithm is integrated with the meshless multi-material interpolation model, and the gradient algorithm is used to update the relative density of the meshless nodes. This method is easy to implement and can realize the LSC of single or multiple phase orthotropic materials accurately in the EFG optimal topological structure. The effects of orthotropic off-angles, LSC strategies, filtering radius, and control domain radius on EFG topological structures and minimum compliance are investigated through numerical examples. The results show that the length scale of the EFG optimal topological structure can meet the requirement of the additive manufacturing, and there will be desirable dimensional gaps between the members using the LSC strategy. The appropriate combination of orthotropic multi-material off-angles can reduce the compliance and improve mechanical performance greatly. The sizes and gaps of topological members become more uniform, and the minimum length scale and compliance of the optimal topological structure will increase with the filtering radius which should be smaller than the control domain radius of the maximum LSC.
Shell-infill composite structure design based on a hybrid explicit- implicit topology optimization method

The present paper introduces a hybrid explicit–implicit topology optimization method for shell-infill composite structure design. The proposed approach effectively combines the advantages of the explicit Moving Morphable Component (MMC) method, which describes structural topology only using a set of geometric parameters, and the implicit Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) method, which offers greater design freedom for characterizing the structural features. Compared to the existing methods for shell-infill structure design, the proposed approach can obtain optimized shell-infill structures with complex infill topology without resorting to complex filtering/projection operations. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
A multivariate level set method for concurrent optimization of graded lattice structures with multiple microstructure prototypes

The concurrent optimization design of graded lattice structures (GLSs) considering both the diversity of microstructure prototypes and the geometric continuity has attracted extensive attention. This paper presents a multivariable level set-based topology optimization method for designing GLSs considering the matching of multiple microstructure prototypes. In this method, the basic level set functions (LSFs) of implicit and designable microstructures are constructed using the signed distance function. Multiple sets of LSFs are further developed by introducing weight coefficients to generate GLSs based on the basic LSFs. During optimization, each set of LSFs will generate a sub-GLS corresponding to the pre-defined microstructure prototype. Then, the final GLS containing multiple microstructures is obtained by combining these sub-GLSs through a union operation. Due to the continuity of the multivariable LSF, perfect geometric connections between neighboring graded microstructures are guaranteed without imposing any extra constraints. This work offers a novel strategy to optimize the macroscopic graded pattern of GLSs, resulting in an enlarged design space and performance improvement. Several 2D and 3D examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.
