Heritage and postmodern tourism

Abstract

The complex relationships between tourism and heritage are revealed in the tensions between tradition and modernity. The role of heritage in postmodern tourism is examined, particularly built heritage, which is at the heart of cultural tourism. Four challenging issues in linking heritage and tourism are discussed: interpretation, marketing built heritage, planning for heritage, and the interdependencies between heritage tourism and the local community. Differences in approaches to the four issues indicate that heritage tourism raises more than planning and management issues for developing countries; they are fundamentally the problems of development.

Résumé

Patrimoine et tourisme postmoderne. Les liens complexes entre le tourisme et le patrimoine se révèlent dans les tensions entre la tradition et la modernisme. On examine le rôle du patrimoine dans le tourisme postmoderne, surtout le patrimoine construit, qui est au coeur du tourisme culturel. On discute quatre questions difficiles vis-à-vis des liens entre le patrimoine et le tourisme: l'interprétation, la commercialisation du patrimoine construit, la préparation du patrimoine futur et l'interdépendance entre le tourisme patrimonial et la communauté locale. Les différentes façons d'aborder les quatre questions montrent que le tourisme patrimonial soulève des problèmes qui vont au-delà de la planification et la gestion pour les pays en voie de développement: ce sont les problèmes du développement même.

The impact of pluralistic values on postmodern tourists' behavioural intention towards renovated heritage sites

Referring to the value-attitude-behaviour model, perceived pluralistic values may be abstract cognition that influences postmodern tourists to continue to visit renovated heritage sites. However, there is a lack of studies on the pluralistic values of postmodern tourists. Thus, the dimensions of pluralistic values are unclear. This study first conducted personal interviews with 27 postmodern tourists to develop a measurement scale of pluralistic values, which consists of 9 items in two dimensions (open-to-change and fusional culture). Then, 382 postmodern tourists were systematically surveyed. The results indicated that pluralistic values affect the attitudes towards a visited heritage destination and other postmodern heritage sites, and these two attitudes affect the intention to visit other postmodern heritage sites. This study enriches our understanding of postmodernism in tourism, as well as the effects of pluralistic value on postmodern tourists' attitudes and behaviours. It also provides managerial implications to promote postmodern heritage sites.
The conservation and preservation challenges and threats in the development of cultural heritage: The case of the Kawo Amado Kella Defensive Wall (KAKDW) in Wolaita, Southern Ethiopia

The paper is focused on the analysis of the state and risks to Kawo Amado Kella's defensive wall cultural legacy in Wolaita, Ethiopia, and the effects of development project priority, modernity, religion, and globalization. The paper identified the current framework of documentation and conservation policies applied to cultural heritage. Value-based conservation strategies are stated as essential for sustainable heritage management. An efficient management of the defensive wall is stated as necessary to conserve, maintain, and restore heritage structures from any natural and manmade problems. The study used a qualitative ethnographic research approach. Purposive and snowball sampling procedures were utilized in this investigation. There were a total of 171 interviews conducted during all stages of the process. In total, there were 64 women. By being conserved, restored, and preserved, the cultural legacy of Kawo Amado Kella's defensive wall not only helped to preserve an ancient civilization but also contributed to the development of a distinct national and international culture.
Irreconcilability of heritage missions: Personalized and general tourism audiences

This paper explores the tensions between access to heritage as a social good, its commercialization and the subsequent impact this has on service delivery. Drawing on the context of ancestral tourism, a growing heritage tourism segment requiring a high level of personalization, it develops arguments about the structural irreconcilability implicit in contemporary museum service delivery when staff resources do not meet the individualized demands of specialist markets. Its findings reveal how challenges with delivering bespoke services drive tensions surrounding aspirations for greater public access and the commercialization of public heritage. Our focus contributes to debates around heritage missions and public heritage management, illuminating the importance of understanding provider perspectives as museums adapt to more visitor-centered service delivery modes.
Postcolonial ambivalence as per the tourist

This article aims to understand the ways in which ambivalence toward postcolonial mimetic places is exposed in touristic consumption. This article is a single case study investigating Bà Nà Hills, which was initially constructed by the French colonialists and afterwards developed into an entertainment park in Vietnam. Ethnographic research by using face-to-face techniques such as in-depth interviewing and participant observation was undertaken. Findings show the ways in which ambivalent emotional subjectivities coexist between ‘searching for authenticity’ and ‘embracing simulacra’. This article proposes that a postcolonial equivocatory place generates and regulates tourists' ambivalence between the complexities of authenticity and simulacra and that, ambivalence functions as a bridge and an interpretive and analytic tool between individual emotional experience and social changes.
Sustainable urban development of historical cities: Historical Mosul City, Iraq

Due to the imbalance between their historic physical buildings and the requirements of its residents, heritage sites are subject to several urban pressures. However, the major potential for urban growth in such locations is in their historic assets.
The purpose of this research is to provide an approach for conserving and enhancing urban history in a manner that is beneficial to the environment, society, culture, and economics. Heritage conservation is attempting to distinguish itself. This is due to the fact that conservation and sustainability objectives do not always coincide. The findings are based on research conducted in Mosul and a study of sustainable development's concepts and pillars. With the use of UNDP reports, the present condition in Mosul was determined. The results demonstrate the need of devising a strategy to safeguard historic cities while allowing residents to continue to reside there. This plan should include objectives, strategies, and instruments to ensure that the “historic living city” can adapt and evolve in accordance with the sustainable development principles and the sustainability cycles.
The paper uses an inductive methodology to apply sustainable development to historic city centers worldwide.
